On May 17, 2016, an explosion occurred in the Dickinsfield neighbourhood of Fort McMurray. The explosion occurred after ATCO Gas and Pipeline Ltd. (ATCO) restored natural gas service to the area, following the Fort McMurray wildfires.

On May 23, 2019, a Certification Order was granted by the Court, certifying the action as a class action. This is an important procedural step in the litigation.
